Artyzen Singapore Interior Designer Draws Inspiration from Singapore’s Rich Heritage
“Australian interior designer Nic Graham incorporates elements such as barrel vault ceilings, landscaped balconies, digitalized botanical wallpaper, and Peranakan tiles into Artyzen Singapore’s design, reflecting the city’s rich heritage.”
Upon leaving his position as a director at a prominent interior design firm in 1999 to establish his own company, Nic Graham faced the challenge of balancing familial responsibilities with the demands of entrepreneurship. However, through securing commissions for small residential projects, launching a furniture collection, and nurturing client relationships, his firm successfully took root.
Over the span of twenty-four years, Nic Graham & Associates has evolved into a thriving enterprise renowned for its vibrant hospitality design. Notable projects include the QT hotels across Australia and New Zealand, as well as prestigious five-star establishments like The Ritz Carlton Vietnam, W Hong Kong, and W Kuala Lumpur.
Graham’s involvement in the recently inaugurated Artyzen Singapore underscores his firm’s commitment to excellence. Serving as the creative force behind the hotel’s interior design, Graham collaborated with ONG&ONG, who handled the architectural aspects of the project.
Artyzen Singapore represents the 15th addition to Artyzen Hospitality Group’s (AHG) portfolio, the bespoke lifestyle hospitality arm of Shun Tak Holdings Limited. As Shun Tak Holdings expands its ventures beyond Greater China, Artyzen Singapore marks AHG’s inaugural foray into new territories.
Graham credits a fortuitous encounter facilitated by a friend for launching his practice into luxury hotel design. Initially brought in as consultants for the interior design of W Hong Kong, Graham’s firm’s compelling storytelling approach impressed the owner, resulting in a successful design competition win.
Transitioning into the lead design role marked the beginning of Graham’s venture into luxury hotel design. He attributes client interest to his firm’s compelling storytelling approach, which serves as a hallmark of their design philosophy.
For Artyzen Singapore, the narrative draws inspiration from Singapore’s architectural and cultural heritage, incorporating elements such as shophouse motifs, Peranakan influences, and east-meets-west nuances, complemented by lush landscaping.
The hotel’s site holds historical significance, formerly housing a bungalow owned by Tan Hoon Siang, descendant of philanthropist Tan Tock Seng. Named Villa Marie, the 1940s structure showcased arches and Art Deco-inspired geometric motifs, serving as the foundation for the hotel’s design elements.
Arches serve as a recurring motif throughout the hotel’s design, delineating spaces and adding elegance to the interiors. The inclusion of balconies in every guestroom and spacious outdoor patios in select suites enhances the hotel’s outdoor experience.
Incorporating a rich palette of colour and texture, Graham infused guestrooms with polished concrete surfaces, herringbone timber flooring, stone, and brass, complemented by digitalized orchid imagery and commissioned artwork.
On the lower levels, timber louvred shutters and Peranakan tiles evoke the contemporary Straits cuisine ambiance in the upscale dining venue, Quenino by Victor Liong. Meanwhile, the grand Penthouse boasts luxurious gold leaf joinery panels and walls crafted from red travertine.
The hotel’s ambiance aims to counter the impersonal atmosphere often found in large city hotels, prioritising intimacy and warmth reminiscent of home. Residential-scale details contribute to a cosy and comfortable ambiance throughout the hotel.
Graham’s signature style, characterised by a bold utilisation of graphics, colour, and artwork, reflects his passion for art and pattern. This expressive approach reinterprets cultural motifs for contemporary audiences, contributing to the hotel’s unique charm.
Drawing from his familiarity with Singapore’s cultural motifs, Graham effortlessly incorporates elements inspired by the city’s tropical ambiance, architectural marvels, and culinary delights into the project.
When discussing the essential components of a remarkable hotel experience, Graham emphasises the importance of comfort, effective sound insulation, and flattering lighting. Among his preferred stays are establishments appreciated for their timeless ambiance and impeccable upkeep.
With a background in interior design and keen observation of evolving traveller preferences, Graham applauds trends like curated minibar selections for their efficiency and personalised appeal to modern travellers.
Despite an initial passion for culinary arts, Graham’s artistic talents led him to a career in interior design. Encouraged by his mother’s suggestion, he ventured into the field, where his knack for sketching buildings and rearranging furniture found purpose.
Drawing, sketching, and arranging objects remain integral to Graham’s daily routine, underscoring his commitment to hands-on involvement in every project aspect.
Deep involvement in projects facilitates continuous learning and growth for Graham and his team. Each project visit offers insights into design triumphs and shortcomings, contributing to ongoing improvement.
Design’s perpetual evolution captivates Graham, inspiring him to pursue countless future projects and embrace the dynamic nature of his profession.
