Encouraging Indian Tourism: Singapore Expands Hospitality Infrastructure to Welcome Tourists
Singapore is poised to capitalize on the potential influx of tourists from India, signalling a strategic expansion in its hospitality infrastructure. With a keen eye on increasing tourist arrivals, Singapore is gearing up to enhance its capacity to accommodate visitors from India, reflecting a robust growth trajectory in the tourism sector.
Prior to the lockdown brought on by the pandemic, Singapore saw a significant influx of visitors from India, with 1.4 million coming in 2019. Notwithstanding the difficulties caused by the epidemic, the number of visitors demonstrated resiliency, returning to 1.1 million in 2023, highlighting India’s importance as a vital travel destination for Singapore.
Poh Chi Chuan, Executive Director of Exhibitions & Conferences at the Singapore Tourism Board, emphasized the need to fill the additional 9,000 hotel rooms added to the existing 72,000.
This expansion aligns with Singapore’s commitment to providing world-class accommodation options for visitors, ensuring a seamless and enjoyable experience during their stay.
Singapore aims to capitalize on tourist traffic and business travellers, recognizing India’s growing trade and robust economy. Additionally, sectors like pharmaceuticals, biomedicine, IT, and fintech present promising opportunities for bilateral trade and collaboration between Singapore and India.
The Singapore Tourism Board (STB) is spearheading efforts to promote Singapore as a preferred destination for Indian tourists. With offices in Mumbai and Delhi, the STB is aggressively marketing Singapore’s attractions and offerings, aiming to capture the attention of Indian travellers seeking memorable holiday experiences.
In addition to leisure tourism, Singapore is also eyeing opportunities in business travel, recognizing the growing trade relations and economic synergies between the two countries. Sectors such as pharmaceuticals, biomedicine, IT, and FinTech present significant avenues for bilateral trade and collaboration, paving the way for increased business travel between India and Singapore.
The announcement of the APAC edition of the National Retail Federation (NRF) Retail Big Show reflects Singapore’s commitment to hosting global events and conferences. With an expected participation of 5,000 delegates, including industry leaders from India, the event fosters business partnerships and drives innovation in the retail sector.
Key industry figures, including Kumar Rajagopalan, CEO of the Retailers Association of India, Shireesh Joshi, Chief Business Officer of the Open Network for Digital Commerce, and Mathsy Kutty, APAC Leader of The Climate Pledge at Amazon, will address the NRF Retail Big Show.
